Thompson Acoustic Guitar – Now sold

Thompson Quadra P Bass – Now sold

Thompson Acoustic Guitar.

I very rarely do acoustics but here is one of a pair I made around eight years ago.  The body has laminated Mahogany back and sides with a solid Cedar top.  The neck is also Mahogany, somewhat slimmer than many acoustics but perfectly stable with 12 gauge strings at concert pitch. The body and neck are bound in Maple with Abalone inlay on the front, back and headstock with matching dots on the fingerboard and peghead facing. There is a set of Gotoh 510 tuners which are right up the top of the range running about 20:1 ratio, with Ebony buttons along with Ebony bridge pins and matching strap button.  The nut and saddle are bone.  The whole instrument is finished in matt lacquer.

It comes with a moulded plastic hard case.

The price is €1000.00.  Now sold.

Thompson Quadra P type Bass

This is the last of the solid bodied basses I made around eight years ago and was one of three, one with a clear finish and the other with a Fiesta red see though lacquer and a gold anodised pickguard.  The body is Alder with a custom mixed finish equating to “Sea Foam Green” if you look at old guitar or car catalogues from the 1950s.  The pickguard is off white although the camera makes it all appear lighter than it is as well as making the body appear more blue than green.

Those pickups were a one off set I wound myself using Alnico 5 magnets and 42 gauge wire, around 10k, and although they were successful in what I was aiming for I don’t know if I would do it again.  The sound is absolute “Fender Precision” with real clarity but without any mud or imbalance and completely silent electronics as the bass is fully shielded.  The volume and tone controls are remarkably linear in their operation.

The bridge is a high mass Gotoh unit and the tuners Schaller BMFL in nickel. One piece of medium flame Maple is used for the neck with a pre 55 headstock, gloss finish on the front and matt on the back..  I like the “Tele” style peghead on F basses as they are a few ounces lighter than the original design, which makes a good difference when added to the distance they are from the central strap point and the balance on this bass is pretty neutral on the strap.  Interestingly, the usual C# on the G string Fender dead spot is not present, perhaps the altered mass of the peghead has some bearing. Nut width is 38mm like a J Bass and is 19mm deep at the first fret going to 21mm at the body end.  Note also the lack of heel where the neck joins the body allowing easier access to the upper frets.  This is how I do all my bolt on necks and have modified a good number of Fenders to incorporate it.

It is currently set with a low action and pretty well plays itself.  A new set of DR High Beam 45-100 strings was fitted last year but it hasn’t been out of the case other than to be checked.

There is one small blemish on the paint by the heel and a tiny dent on the back.  I played a few gigs and did some recording with this bass but it’s otherwise as new.  It comes with a decent padded bag.
